When and Why You Should Clean Your Firearms

Remington 1100 Trigger Group

Many people see firearms as a means to an end. A way to put meat on the table and be proud of the hard work it takes to bag that Buck, God willing. It is something we do one season a year. And while you may put your gun away thinking it will perform just as good next season, there are a multitude of reasons why you should give it a good cleaning and lubrication before putting it back in the case.

For others, our firearms represent a way to enjoy our 2nd Amendment rights responsibly. Competitive shooting, backyard plinking, LARPing, and LEO training are just a few activities that put a real good layer of gunk on your guns. All of the sudden, that well-performing piece of machined steel fails at the worst possible time.

That may not be a big problem for the recreational shooter. For others, it could cost them a spot in competition, or worse. A failure at a time when you need a precise shot at long range game, or firing a round in decisive self-defense can end devastatingly. There’s no reason your firearm shouldn’t operate in its best condition every time you take it out of the case or holster. Ensuring everything is clean, lubricated, and properly reassembled is critical.

There are some of you that are reading this, and thinking to yourself “I always clean my guns after using them.” But do you? If so, you’re definitely a great paradigm for disciplined maintenance! More often than not, we have the best intentions of making sure we clean our firearms. With people adding more and more firearms to their arsenals, it can be hard to find the time.

Clearly, we want more time outdoors with our friends and family and less time getting greased up. We may like the smell of Love Potion No. 9 (Hoppe’s, of course.), but our wives don’t want us to smell like we use it as cologne. Above all, we just want more time to shoot and less time cleaning!

This is where your local Armorer or Gunsmith can help. These experts have all the tools, cleaning supplies, and lubricants suggested for use by your firearm’s manufacturer. They can ensure your rifle, pistol, or shotgun is disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated to the manufacturer’s specifications. It’s important to look for those embracing the fast-paced world we live and work in.

For example, at OK Armorer’s, you have the ability to drop off your firearm. Just like a pet being dropped off at the spa. At the end of the day, your gun will be ready for the next time you are ready to pull the trigger. We also offer mobile services! On-site, same-day cleaning of one or many firearms. And for the enthusiast, we have monthly plans available that cover multiple guns for multiple cleanings!
